A Candid Explanation of my Finances

Image
In this post I'm going to explain my financial situation. Finances can be a very controversial topic, and as I receive a government benefit it's even more so. People in New Zealand overall have a low opinion of people who receive government 'handouts' because of a perception they are lazy and spend their money on unnecessary luxuries, junk food, and drugs. Meanwhile, people overseas can be jealous of the system. This post is personal, not political, though of course I have opinions and they aren't all positive. In this post I'm just sharing my situation, which is a unique one because my partner isn't a New Zealand resident or citizen so he isn't eligible for any government benefits himself. Meanwhile, I qualify as long-term disabled because of my Bipolar II, and as long as this is confirmed by a doctor it also qualifies me for the Supported Living Payment from the government without any obligation to find work. It doesn't prevent me from working, eit...

Mutual Friends with Abusers

Image
I have these mutual friends myself, and I have also been this mutual friend and even lost friends when they discovered I wasn't taking sides. Please understand that this is only a perspective and I'm not trying to make anyone else reading this share this perspective. It absolutely is possible, but very rare, for someone to be a mutual friend. They must have boundaries strong enough to continue to love the abuser after hearing the truth but the strength to refuse to buy into it, and they can support the person who was abused without feeding information back to the abuser, or in fact help the victim stay safe by sharing information that helps them to avoid the abuser. Unfortunately for us victims, the emotional hurt and constant disrespect of our boundaries by our abusers creates a pattern that makes it very difficult to believe mutual friends are a possibility, because it does take a lot of strength that you can't always expect or trust is real in these very rare others. Per...

The Baby Spider's Web

Image
Transcription: A message to any who feel they are unnoticed and unappreciated: Once upon a time there was a baby spider, not much bigger than the period at the end of this sentence. It did what this kind of spider does and spent the night building a tiny web with great effort. When it was done, it rested upon its creation and merely existed. Another creature came along, one of immense comparative size. It was so big it would not have had to put any effort at all into destroying hours of work in a fleeting second. The larger creature paused, and noticed the placement of the spider's creation which spanned a gap in a gate to allow a hand through so as to unlatch it from the other side. Unaware of its power and influence the spider continued to sit upon its creation and merely existed. It was tiny, vulnerable, veritably powerless against forces so much greater than it could possibly comprehend. And yet, by creating something and merely existing this spider changed the course of a gian...

The Anxious Mouse

The Fable of the Anxious Mouse By Vixy Moore Once upon a time there was a mouse who lived in the country. Every day she went about her mousey business, gathering materials and food for the communal nest, greeting other mice, grooming and sleeping. One day, she was in the barn pulling straw from a bale for bedding when the farm cat pounced at her from out of nowhere! The mouse squeaked and ran into a tiny gap between the bales until she was deep enough that the cat’s searching paw couldn’t reach her. Her heart pounded, her muscles were tense, and her breath only came in short gasps. It was a long, long time after the cat had gone that she was able to calm down enough to go home, without any straw. The other mice were unhappy seeing her arrive back with nothing. Everyone else had done their job and brought back new bedding materials and food for the colony. “It happens,” one of the mice told her. “Tomorrow is another day. Just make sure you come home with something ...
